King Diamond Songs for the Dead Live Metal Blade Records Review por Johonny Gonzalez @conexionrockhn

King Diamond Songs for the Dead Live Metal Blade Records Review by Johonny Gonzalez @conexionrockhn
Talking about a character within the metal as King Diamond is a reference of admiration but at the same time of controversy that has fed several generations of bands and headbangers since the 80's with that powerful first incarnation of his musical career called Mercyful Fate, and that from there would take a parallel course with his own project that has produced albums that are enshrined as classics and have marked the lives of more than one to hear their songs or be literally haunted by them especially in a live concert
Currently, at the age of 62, he returns triumphantly with a double live album that for many will be a delight in both the visual and audio aspects, and he makes a tour of some special moments of his career, revisiting his days in the same way. Mercyful Fate After several tours and return to the activity to devote to recover their health after an intervention years ago, and to devote to his family we have as a result Songs for the Dead Live. A direct double recorded in two different places: the first with a sold out in Fillmore, Philadelphia that was recorded in November 2015, and the second in Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016, handling the same setlist and celebrating in particular one of its most emblematic works such as Abigail, and that for their unconditional and devoted fans wanted this ambitious project to be a reality, which is now materialized on the date of its launch worldwide on January 25, 2019.
The protagonists of this important document are: Andy LaRocque in Guitars and Keyboards, King Diamond in the Voice and Keyboards, his Wife Livia Zita in the Choirs, Mike Wead in the Guitars, Matt Thompson in the Drums, and Pontus Egberg in the Bass.
After his last studio album Give Me Your Soul ... Please in 2007, King seeks to make up for the lost time, and without a doubt the ground is recovered with this live release, and that shows majesty in the scenarios prepared for the occasion, like of the songs selected for it.
We enter the full development of the video. While the main attraction of this release marks the complete presentation of Abigail, Songs for the Dead Live also gives us important moments that are worthy of singing at the top of our lungs such as Welcome Home, Halloween, Sleepless Nights and The Eye to mention some examples. As a novelty in the live show appear in his setlist themes of the time with Mercyful Fate as being Come To The Sabbath and the emblematic Melissa King tells us in his notes of the twisted story of a witch burned by the inquisition, and that Curiously, a skull that he was wearing on his tours was called Melissa, but it was stolen on his tour of the Netherlands.
Something that has surprised us and at the same time we received with great joy is how King has kept his vocal record intact, and he has confessed that he had to change several habits (one of them being a smoker) and after his heart surgery He has been able to regain strength, and in this direct he is accompanied by his wife Livia, who fits perfectly into the choirs. Listening to Welcome Home, Halloween or The Family Ghost with their Falsettos anyone would make the skin shudder and how things are done well in a concert!
Speak of the rest of the band is to see at first impression a lubricated and synchronized machine from start to finish of the show (1 hour and 20 minutes in Fillmore and Graspop) Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead become the Double Axe Attack and they literally steal the show, on the other hand, Pontus Egberg is not left behind contributing his own in the bass and being as an intermediate point between both guitarists, and of course Matt Thompson who has done an outstanding job as Drummer, and that many fans of the band expect of Matt very good things in the coming years within the environment of King Diamond.
Differences between both sets and places? Definitely yes. This could represent a small point against the recording of the video in both places. In Graspop as it is of general knowledge it is an outdoor concert, while in Fillmore it is a smaller place but with the advantage that you can gather a lot of people to enjoy the show from start to finish, although the effect of Interaction between the band and audience make a perfect communion.
On the other hand anyone would think they could have changed the selist or play other songs that years ago have not been able to revisit, but in the end you get the satisfaction that you will have in your personal collections an official audio visual document that we all expected in a lifetime contemplate it either in their direct or in the privacy of our homes.
Highlights are the large number of cameras that are distributed both on stage and in the public, for example, in grandma's wheelchair and Abigail's coffin. The stage is perfect for a soundtrack of a horror movie, inverted crosses, evil gargoyles on both sides with a setting worthy of a satanic church, and undoubtedly are aspects that the cameramen have taken advantage of to generate an interaction once we watch this video .
Of something if it is sure friends, we are witnessing an important moment in the career of King Diamond, and that this DVD (or Bluray) once you have it in your hands you can enjoy this live show in each of its aspects for small or large crowds, and it is a test that King returns from the dead and will offer us with his show of horror and beyond the grave that the dead and alive will walk together by strange paths on a black cloud, and that is a warning that the ghost of Abigail will pursue us forever! Long live the King!
