THERION

THERION
Leviathan Nuclear Blast Records Review by Johonny Gonzalez @conexionrockhn 2021 will significantly mark important releases by the great bands around the world, and despite the current circumstances in which we live they represent a light and a breath of fresh air, and that is a gesture worthy of thanks towards the artists. This is the case of the Swedish Symphonic Metal band THERION, who return through the big door with their new work, the number 17 in their career called LEVIATHAN, which will be released on January 22 via Nuclear Blast Records, and that for many consider that the band will take an important step in their career that after a bittersweet Beloved Antichrist we were afraid that this new work was some sequel to the previous one, but seeing the reactions at the time the best For its founder and mastermind Christofer Johnsson it was to return to the traditional formula of consecrated works such as Sirus B, Lemuria and including Gothic Kabbalah where the band experienced a period of unprecedented musical growth, and that many when listening to the album away from negative reviews will give to the band a tremendous standing ovation. A work composed of 11 songs with a duration of 45 minutes, presents to Christofer Johnsson on Guitars, Voices, Keyboards and Basses, and complemented by the talent of Christian Vidal- Guitars, Nalle Påhlsson- Bass, and counting on the Voices of Thomas Vikström and Lori Lewis, also with several special collaborations like Mats Levén, Snowy Shaw, Chiara Malvestiti, Rosalía Sairem, Noa Gruman and the great Marco Hietala ex Bassist and Voice of Nightwish.
Leviathan rises with The Leaf on the Oak of Far, a song that carries the classic DNA of the band with very rock and symphonic overtones, here he will set a guideline for what he will offer in the journey of this album.
Tuonela with a completely folk air is one of the most remarkable points where Marco Hietala's vocal tone is recognized here and in China, and it is undoubtedly one of the pleasant surprises of this work.
The title track of the album and which incidentally was the first single to be promoted is a Sirus B or Lemuria-style delight where Lori Lewis and Thomas Vikström make this song one of the band's classics and especially a must for their concerts. .
You want to close your eyes, feel your skin crawl or a tear escape your eyes, in Die Wellen der Zeit make that goal with the sweet voice of Taida Nazraić who is the vocalist of the Serbian band The Loudest Silence, who by the way is the second single, and where the band takes a break to wrap us in an atmosphere of nostalgia and modernism. Aži Dahāka takes speed to offer variety in riffs where guitars and keyboards are perfect accomplices in combination with the rest of the instruments, and in a matter of taste we come across here a very dynamic song that will make an interesting difference in the discography of Therion. Eye of Algol is pure majesty from start to finish and that will blow the heads of more than one, this could be a candidate for a future video, without a doubt another breath of fresh air for its fans.
We continue on the path and we come across the peaceful Nocturnal Light that at first impression would take us to the times of Lemuria or Gothic Kabbalah, an explosion of instruments where in its middle part we briefly run into Arabic passages. The shortest track on the album is represented by Great Marquis of Hell, where Vikström makes his own in a leading role, and which becomes another of the highlights of the album. Psalm of Retribution will make us remember in a certain way some sound passages from another work such as Sitra Ahra, and that glorious works from his early symphonic years where the voice of Mats Levén shines with its own light, this is one of the classic hymns of the band a future. In El Primer Sol Thomas and Lori make their own this song that has parts sung in Spanish, and that we could associate it with another classic such as Quetzalcoatl, many will dare that with this track we have the continuation of this classic that appears in Lemuria, for him It´s a fact that Latin American audiences will sing it at the top of their lungs in their concerts. And the end comes with Ten Courts of Diyu with an oriental, mystical and gloomy flavor. With an opera execution that puts a dignified closure to this work that will put to Therion back on the right track for the years to come. In conclusion, we have in our hands a work by Therion that makes them return to the path that they should never have deviated for many years, without detracting from interesting experiments such as Les Fleurs du Mal, but that with a Beloved Antichrist was a clear sign that despite From being an ambitious project with good intentions, it was a test of tolerance, to the point of being considered forgettable in his discography except for some salvageable songs.
If you like the Sirus B stage, Lemuria with Lepaca Kliffoth airs, you will see in this Leviathan a viable option for you to enjoy, despite the maturity and the great history they carry behind them, this creative effort deserves to be appreciated by those who They have followed them for a lifetime, and from new generations looking for interesting proposals, and that Therion will undoubtedly be one of their favorites. Mandatory to have it in your collections
