Omega Nuclear Blast Records Review by Johonny González @conexionrockhn The world continues in confinement thanks to the Covid 19 pandemic that has left great losses in the entertainment industry in 2020, and everything seems to indicate that 2021 is on the same path, but not everything is bad and fatalistic at first impression, In recent months, many bands have made the most of it to release excellent works, and that both the public and critics have known how to praise these releases, and that for many it has represented a breath of fresh air in this situation. This is one of those cases, which in the first months of this year brings us a new record production, and without hesitation ladies and gentlemen: this is one of the best works in its history. And we refer to the band EPICA, who gave us this past February 26 their work number 8 in their history and which is called OMEGA, released worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records. 5 years have passed after that impressive The Holographic Principle, which at the time was also acclaimed by all, and consequently has opened the doors to a large number of tours on several continents, reaching out to a large and devoted legion of fans who have known to enjoy each concert and special moment with its members as a religious experience. After a few EP's, and a well-deserved time of rest between the album-tour-album routine, the band considered that it was time to prepare something new, and the ideas were ready to shape what would be their next work, but the pandemic generate a great delay, but far from causing concern, these talented musicians have taken as much time as possible to make a production that exceeded expectations for their fans, and the premise would be fulfilled in Omega, composed of 12 tracks and with a duration of 1 hour and 11 minutes and where the band presents us through their songs a wonderful journey to the top of the mountain, and that we must literally go through a labyrinth through concepts that are based on the Theory of the Omega Point and the Emerald Table (both theories of ancient origins where the spirit and the Universe merge at one point)
Alpha - Anteludium marks the beginning of the adventure, and that without a doubt on their tours this will be the intro with which they will start, then comes the first single Abyss of Time - Countdown to Singularity, which has been released on video, where the band uses that traditional but successful resource of operatic and harsh vocals in the manner of Beauty and the Beast, and the choice to be the first preview turned out to be the most successful approach to be played on radios and that its video has high diffusion on channels all over the world.
The Skeleton Key will be another favorite for the fans, and consecrated to be a classic that will be in high demand in future concerts and compilations.
One of the highlights, epic in the sense of the word, and your server's favorite is without a doubt Seal Of Solomon. Completely dominated with Arabic settings and that in contrast with Mark vocals, this track will have the merits to be a classic. Epica has known how to maintain a formula of making dynamic songs where the orchestrations and choirs have that exquisite dynamics, and Gaia offers those ingredients.
This is just an interlude for another classic and here the first participation with one of the two guests, and we refer to Code Of Life, that's where Zaher Zorgati from the band Myrath does his thing on the vocals. Anyone would think that this track would fit perfectly into the Tunisians discography since the oriental style is very much their own of them, but that Simone and the rest of the band have decided to experience this in their own way, resulting in a candidate for a video to future. We reach the second half of the album and the dark Freedom - The Wolves Within begins that path with speed and elegance where the guitars of Mark and Isaac contrast perfectly with the rhythmic base of Ariën that like a human metronome imposes that precision in this song.
With Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 - The Antediluvian Universe, a cycle that we have been following since previous delivers such as Design Your Universe and The Quantum Enigma is closed here. It´s the longest track in this work with a duration of 13 and a half minutes. An opus that has the basics to appear in any adventure and fantasy soundtrack, all those elements here make special one of the most important moments in Omega, and that more than one will make you scream with emotion and even have goose bumps, and that they guarantee that those almost 14 minutes are the most fully enjoyable, especially the choirs, and surprise a drum set that plays between Death Metal and Blasts Beats, something that is a trademark resource of the house and an epic and aggressive duel between Isaac Delahaye and Coen Jansen, and that many of us look forward to seeing this performance at their live concerts. In Rivers we have the perfect ballad from the album, and at the same time another of the promotional singles for Omega. It evokes that intimate and nostalgic atmosphere, where the choirs towards the end of the song give it that special touch where it will be merely inevitable to sing it live. So if you want something magical, in Rivers you will have that spell to relax the soul. Entering the final part of this work, the galloping Synergize - Manic Manifest appears, and that gives us some Epica that make this piece a cut of speed and dynamics that catches the listener at first impression with a powerful chorus, the definition of a injection of energy is manifested in this track. Maintaining that same line we come to Twilight Reverie - The Hypnagogic State, where Vicky Psarakis from The Agonist brings a perfect balance to Simone's vocals, leaving an excellent counterpoint to Mark's gutturals and a bombastic solo towards the end of the song.
The great finale is represented by the majestic Omega - Sovereign of the Sun Spheres, a climax that combines symphonic and progressive passages, and that is another of the great moments of the album where a Simone Simons leaves the skin in the 7 minutes of duration of this piece, and that all its members shine for their own prominence with another song that will be classic in the history of the Dutchs, and that marks the worthy closure of this adventure with a way out of the labyrinth and that these musicians have known how to break the limits already established as artists. And at the end of listening and being left with that feeling that we enjoy that trip, our mind asks us: Has Epica reached its peak with Omega?
The answer is an absolute YES Already the formula of intros, ballads, long songs and delicious progressions are part of Epica's DNA, where perhaps you have the audacity to compare this work with a classic like Design Your Universe and call Omega as his “little brother”. Let time put things in their place for Omega, in short, we have a product that offers you variety without having to jump between tracks, that you can enjoy from start to finish if you are a staunch fan of the band or symphonic metal . Here Epica with Omega has closed a glorious cycle, and it only remains that you enjoy it at home, and that you support the band by buying either its CD, vinyl or special edition. This album is definitely worth it. It only remains to say to Mark, Simone, Coen, Isaac, Rob and Ariën: Thank you for such a tremendous album, mission accomplished! A cycle is closing, and it only remains to hope to enjoy tours for 2022 and therefore a new adventure, majesty, magic, aggression, eloquent ... that's Epica! Rating: 9/10
