FALCONER
FALCONER
From A Dying Ember Metal Blade Records Review by Johonny González @conexionrockhn In recent years Swedish metal has given the world a significant number of bands that have contributed to a community on several continents high quality works that over time and on their own merit have become classics, and the album we are going to review has the qualities to be this to leave high the legacy of a band. Such is the case of Falconer, who present us with his work number 9 called From a Dying Ember, and which was released on June 26, 2020 via Metal Blade Records, consisting of 11 tracks in the normal version and 14 in the digipack edition with Duration of 46 minutes introduces us to the band in the final chapter of their career ... as you read it ... their last album. Thing that would cause a great impact among his fans with mixed feelings on the one hand and resignation to wish the best of luck to its members in their respective musical adventures. Produced by the band together with Andy LaRocque, he has been their regular producer throughout his career, and which has resulted in an interesting work that, compared to his previous works, has managed to meet the expectations of his fans with his Folk / Power Metal sound. that has managed to conquer audiences around the world, an example of this we could mention highlights such as Kings and Queens or the fast Desert Dreams, In Regal Attire, the instrumental Garnets and a Gilded Rose, and Testify are some examples of the musical variety that Falconer brings us in the twilight of his musical adventure that far from being a sadness we will find a true musical party with a medieval flavor where the voice of Mathias Blad gives that special touch to all the songs, and that we could vaguely remember Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian, or Mystic Prophecy and Tad Morose to name examples. Many could compare this work with previous abums such as Bad Moon Rising, Among Beggars and Thieves or Grime vs. Grandeur, but since their debut car titled in 2001 they came with the intentions to evolve and reinvent themselves in each of their releases, making Ember an interesting exercise to analyze the quality that each of its musicians brings, leaving you with the feeling that these 6 Years of silence were worth it to enjoy a well-conducted history lesson.
The surprise is represented by Rejoice The Adorned, a piano ballad and orchestration, which could be almost a preview of an upcoming Broadway production, and shows us that the band is versatile in various aspects within its sound, and that it has undoubtedly demonstrated in this song as one of the most interesting points within the album that show some Falconers sure of what they want and want to do. Rapture arrives, in addition to being the longest song, it also represents one of the moments where Jimmy Hedlund shines with his own light giving those virtuous riffs that are not wasted and that would literally blow your head at the first impression, and that together with Fool's Crusade, Authorship by Stefan Weinerhall has brought our minds to remembering sounds and influences thanks to his former band Mithotyn. For many, this work maintains the magic and majesty that the band has maintained as the main formula during these 20 years, modernizing and innovating elements within their proposal, breaking established molds within Power Metal with vocalists who use their high note resources, making some cases this sounds monotonous or generic, but in the case of Falconer everything lies in the fact that Mathias Blad gets into the skin of a narrator, troubadour and innkeeper such is the case of Bland sump och Dy, a party song that forced you to have beer and be happy in a conversation, this makes it more attractive, and at the same time interesting to listen to an educated voice that generates a delicious and balanced contrast with the rest of the instruments, just as tracks like Thrust the Dagger do justice Deep, and Redeem and Repent. In conclusion, if you are a lifelong fan of Falconer, with this latest album they return with the premise of not being disappointed, and the promise was fulfilled with a work that worthily closes their career, which will be enshrined from now on as a classic in a discography that for 20 years has offered an adventure that happily or sadly comes to an end.
It will be time that separates them (for now) and will be the one that reunites them perhaps in the future. For now, it only remains to say thanks to Stefan Weinerhall, Karsten Larsson, Mathias Blad, Magnus Linhardt, Jimmy Hedlund for making this From a Dying Ember a special experience in Falconer's history, in the same way to the musicians who in previous years have He contributed his talent to maintain a legacy that for two decades ends in 2020. Long Live Falconer Long Live Falconer Rating: 9/10 Tracklist: 1- Kings and Queens 2- Desert Dreams 3- Redeem and Repent 4- Bland sump och dy 5- Fool's Crusade 6- Garnets and a Gilded Rose 7- In Regal Attire 8- Rejoice the Adorned 9- Testify 10- Thrust the Dagger Deep 11- Rapture Bonus in the Digipack edition: 12- The Cauldron 13- Portals of Light (Acoustic Version) 14- Long Gone By (Acoustic Version) In this link you can read our interview with Stefan Weinerhall talking about From A Dying Ember
