IHSAHN

IHSAHN
TELEMARK Candlelight Records / Mnemosyne Productions Review by Johonny González @conexionrockhn In recent years, many bands and artists within the Black Metal genre have made interesting changes around their proposals both at the collective and individual level, suggesting between the lines the search for fresh ideas, reinventing themselves and not using known formulas that for many usually occur. Expressions of "monotonous", "boring", or "more of the same ..." to mention some examples. In the analysis that we present below we will talk about a reference character within the scene, and that literally with his solo project has given a change of 360 degrees, considering its sound as innovative, attractive and daring, where it has incorporated instruments that have not been common, pointing him out as an avant-garde artist. We refer on this occasion to Mr. Vegard Sverre Tveitan, better known as IHSAHN, remembered for being the mastermind and composer of bands such as Emperor, God of Atheists, Thou Shalt Suffer, Peccatum, Zyklon-B, among others from a long list of projects and bands where he has grown in learning musically speaking, and that after 15 years of continuous activity with his solo project arrives in 2020 with an EP called Telemark via Candlelight Records in association with Mnemosyne Productions, with a duration of 25 minutes, featuring 5 tracks, 3 of them sung in Norwegian and two covers.
And they will be wondering: why an EP and not a long duration? Apparently Ihsahn has decided to experiment in launching his works in this format, which partly represent a saving of time in relation to an LP whose process can last months and even years, so after the launch of this interesting work will offer us more surprises sometime in 2020. After the release of Emperor's Prometheus - The Discipline of Fire & Demise in 2005, and the break that the band would have until 2017, it was a special opportunity to try new paths as far as progression in their sound is concerned, resulting in interesting works as The Adversary and AngL, in which we all thought that he would follow the established patterns of his main band, but the surprise would represent for many his 2007 work: After where he incorporates progressive elements, and that from there the sound of the Saxophone of Jørgen Munkeby's hand would be a special badge for his next releases. But, let's talk about Telemark.
Telemark for those who know the protagonist for the first time in this report, is a province of Norway, specifically Ihsahn lives in Notodden, one of the most temperate places in the country, besides being the commercial center of eastern Telemark, in addition to being an industrial and academic center. Where our protagonist makes a tribute to this place and that at personal discretion is a return to its roots, but giving it a completely renewed air. Recall that he was awarded the prize "Notodden Kommunes Kulturpris". This is a cultural award granted by his hometown, Notodden for being his best-known inhabitant and who works as a music teacher and organizes many concerts for unknown bands. Mixed in Fascination Street Studios and final result of the renowned producer Jens Bogren, the album starts with Stridig (which according to our guest in the recent interview we conducted) refers to “Strident” in Norwegian, a song that marks an accelerated pace where the Drums and the Saxophone take center stage in the first minutes and then capture us in a slow time where the Bass, the guttural, and the Guitars take their part, and that prior to its release is the presentation single of this EP.
Nord is the second track, with an introduction of old school Black Metal, and Jazz elements, makes listening a pleasant experience to the ears, and that without a doubt this song will be the most requested in their concerts . With Telemark, anyone would think that we would listen to something relaxed by its acoustic guitars that evoke an oriental and melodic atmosphere, but it would wake us up unexpectedly in the 3.20 minute when it takes speed and aggression in the remainder of the song, and that will inevitably make us move the head from there. So far we come with the unpublished part ...
From here Ihsahn gives us two covers that have no waste, and that molded to their style have achieved an interesting result for the closure of Telemark: Rock And Roll Is Dead authored by Lenny Kravitz. Ihsahn has commented that one of the fascinations since his early days as a musician was to make versions of these songs that were part of the soundtrack of his youth, and that now in this EP he has decided to make this sinful pleasure where he has felt like a fish in the water making a very faithful version of the original, and we do not doubt that for his next work we have surprises of this type. And for a worthy closure ... a tall classic! Nothing but Wrathchild from Iron Maiden It has definitely given a twist with the original that came out in 1981, and we bet that both Maiden fans and Steve Harris himself approve without problems this version, and that all instruments have given it a different and worthy look the time of his album Killers. In conclusion: we have a work that despite having a short duration get the objectives to capture the attention of the listener from start to finish, with a formula between tracks of medium duration, different from each other, and that show an interesting page within Ihsahn's story that has managed to break established paradigms and make this EP a perfect comfort zone, and that will leave us with the feeling of repeating the playlist as many times as necessary
