SEPULTURA
SEPULTURA
Music and Hope United Against the Pandemic One of the biggest metal bands in recent years is back, and this time, they don't come alone! Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews offers to Sepultura fans an interesting interview with a view to what will be a new and interesting page in its history, and which, far from being an occasional experiment, would end up being another record delivery. We communicate to the United States, and that is where Derrick Green, Vocalist of the brazilian band Sepultura, who kindly welcomes us to his house to share with all of you everything related to the new album of the band called SepulQuarta, and that will be released on the 13th of August 2021 through Nuclear Blast Records, and which has a large selection of special guests where they review several classics from their history in an initiative to bring the band and its fans closer to this pandemic confinement that the world has been experiencing since 2020, and that the Brazilians shone strong with Quadra, leaving the door open so that once things are normalized the band can perform at various festivals and continents around the world. Sepultura was formed in 1984 in the city of Belo Horizonte, and they would become known worldwide with extreme works such as Morbid Visions and Bestial Devastation to give examples, and from there they would begin a growing evolution from Death Metal to Thrash for then combining elements of Groove and Nu-Metal, and despite the changes in their line-up the band has remained stable to this day. Andreas Kisser- Guitarras, Paulo Sixto Jr- Bass, Eloy Casagrande- Drums, and Derrick Green- Vocals, are the protagonists of this story, and they have known how to keep this legacy very current that despite high and low times the metal community all over the world has paid their respects. In this conversation we talk about the concept that the band presents with SepulQuarta, the special guests, the worldwide reception towards Quadra, the experience with the guests, interesting curiosities of their entry into Sepultura, and the promising future that the Brazilians seek to do in a project where Music and Hope Against The Pandemic, and that the whole world has known how to receive this new delivery with great joy. Conexión Rock Radio: Derrick, greetings from Honduras, it´s a joy to have you here in this special report for our website and radio station here in our country, in same way for the fans of Sepultura who want to know the upcoming news that the band have in 2021, welcome!
(Thank you very much Johonny, how are you a joy to talk with someone from Honduras on this day!) CR: Your Spanish is really good! DG: My Spanish is terrible (laughs) I can really understand a little when he interacted with the public in Latin America, it is a good and fun impression to react with them. CR: Let's hope this will repeat itself when this whole situation returns to normal, we all need concerts and tours, and speaking of that, how have you felt about not having activity during all these months? Literally the pandemic left everyone punished DG: The truth has been, everything has been an interesting moment. I think when it all happened, we were really ready to go on tour practicing and getting ready to play in America with Crowbar and Sacred Reich. We have been practicing many songs, especially from the new album and with a special setlist for the occasion. Then came the pandemic and generated this negative impact throughout the world, as a band we decided to make a positive impulse on the internet and social networks with people from all over the world, and we decided to interact with all of them on various dates, especially on Wednesdays where we speak and we share stories with all of them, and suddenly we invite several friends to improvise with us live. The truth is that the idea worked very well and we have managed to unite many in this situation of confinement and it has been somewhat less tedious for everyone at that point. CR: Among all the bad things that affect us, the band has good news, you will release their new album called SepulQuarta for August 13th via Nuclear Blast Records.
What expectations do you have in releasing an album like this in these merely atypical circumstances in which we all live? DG: I think it will be great for people to hear the classic Sepultura songs performed by other artists where they reflect their respect and admiration when they played them, you know everything was done in a way where everyone from their own homes could participate with us, everything This is based on the love of music and the value that each song implies in this project. I consider in general terms that this album will be a very difficult project to forget, and it was great to make this document that will be part of our important career, so this is a special gift from Sepultura for their fans where they will appreciate all these classics performed by legendary artists. CR: Definitely, Derrick, all this has generated good feedback between the band and the fans, speaking of which, how have you felt with the general reception you have given Quadra that came out in 2020, against all odds it rose as one of the best releases of last year, and everyone is waiting for the moment to enjoy these songs live
DG: All of these good reactions were very quick, but it was something we've been working on so much and spent so much time with the process of this album, and it was great to have that positive feedback from everyone at the time of both the previews and of the launch. I think we have had very good comments to the point of saying that it is the best work since I entered the band, and all this was in a very upward direction ua despite the good and bad moments through the years I am proud of this new one album and being part of this band, I have also struggled to stick together since that transition years ago. But I value every comment people have given me, and we can't wait to play again and share a great time with all of them, that's where we'll really see people's reaction to this new material. CR: Definitely, this album has many good songs, we remembered an interview we did with Andreas (Kisser) in those days and we expressed our fascination with Quadra, tracks like Insolation, Last Time, Capital Enslavement, Guardians of Earth, Fear • Pain • Chaos • Suffering, are highlights of a great album like Quadra
DG: I think it was great working with Jens Bogren, the producer of the album, and it was great to feel very comfortable working with him again and we really took our time to compose and write ideas. It was so this album I think is longer than the other albums we've finished so I think you can hear that you know that we really took our time, you know in the writing process and I've always had that hunch that this would be a great work, and this has been the result of our effort as a band. Also this is our third album with Eloy Casagrande as drummer, and I feel that it gives so much energy and power to the band and that is why I feel that we are definitely living an important moment in our career and I think that a lot of people will listen and appreciate everything that I know. has done so far. There are many classic elements of the band there, and that we have taken everything from its roots. For that and much more, Sepultura has been there for the fans. CR: Let's talk about SepulQuarta
We know that the band decides to make a series of videos where you revisit several classics from your history with special guests. How did the idea of making this Project possible come about? Was it planned or did you think that this project was temporary due to the crisis in which we all live? DG: I think it was something that happened in the moment, so if you do something like that you know it could be spontaneous, you know, playing a live show with guests and interacting with people we looked at it would be great to do a full concert. That shows that playing the songs with the guests was a special and incredible show at the same time. For the people it was a pleasure to see all those people performing those songs, and at the end of all the options were left open with the band and we were able to overcome some obstacles such as the home recording processes and their schedules to know who was available and who was. occupied. In the end, the fans enjoyed these sessions where there was a wonderful chemistry between everyone involved, and the most special thing was sharing that respect for the legacy that has been written for all these years. CR: For this new album you have a list of highly recognized guests from the scene around the world such as David Ellefson, Phil Rind, Devin Townsend, Alex Skolnick, Fred Leclercq, Rafael Bittencourt, Phil Campbell, among others.
What experiences did the band have in working with these talented musicians for SepulQuarta? DG: Everything was great because when this whole idea took shape, the songs were offered to the guests, and from the first moment they felt very comfortable covering them. It was really a great experience because we had no idea what would happen at the time, especially experimenting with sounds that we haven't played in a long time. In the end it was excellent to revisit the versions, especially listening to them by other artists who have felt admiration for the songs and the albums that each one of them represents in their different timelines. Everything was natural from the beginning and if they forgot the lyrics or some guitar or bass lines that is very normal. The important thing there is to live from the experience. CR: We want to know if it has been easy or difficult to bring all these people together. Was there someone who for some reason was left out of the project? DG: We were actually very lucky with most of the guests. For scheduling reasons it was a bit problematic because some were willing and others were not, and it was very difficult to get the artist to do it in a certain time. Seeing that it was impossible to travel from one point to another, the best thing was that everything was done from their homes, and then you know that we were very lucky that people were available to do it, anyway, nobody would think that they could reject the invitation to the project and thank God we were able to count on everyone at the end. CR: We know that the idea will be to the liking of the fans, many would think that Sepultura is unifying fans from all over the world with this confinement with these guests, on the other hand, they will say that SepulQuarta is a mere tribute to the band, what do you think? of it?
DG: It's really great, I mean, that's a long story where we have touched the lives of so many people, especially if you know about Sepultura's music and they have followed us all these years. Many consider that this should be an album, although in reality, it is about different people and artists, especially Brazilians who make these good interpretations, and I liked hearing the versions of these people and it is much more interesting to know their perception of them. songs, the truth is that we are open as a band and from my point of view I consider that tributes like this are received with open arms, especially if they are done with great respect. CR: Something that will attract our attention is the selection of the songs, the majority that appear in this SepulQuarta are from the recent stuff, but don´t appear tracks from Arise, Schizophrenia, Morbid or Bestial, including A-Lex, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart among others. Regarding the selection of songs, was it an initiative of the band or of the guests who were looking for a comfort zone in their performances? DG: I think everything turned out that way, I mean, for example, there is nothing of Arise on this album we tried to include her there and we played her before, but we had the feeling that there was a lack of gas there (laughs), and we gave her the opportunity for someone to notice the album (Arise) but surprisingly it didn't work. So the best thing was to give the option that the guests took the selection of the songs and we ended up in a 50/50 agreement, in the end the guests said "this is the song we want to do" although we were open to see if someone would take songs by Arise or A-Lex we would be prepared to do the performances that would appear in the live sessions. CR: The cover of the album is very beautiful, by the way, it is the work of Eduardo Recife that a dead bird appears and at the same time some flowers are being born.
Does Sepultura give us a message of hope that we will be reborn in the midst of a crisis that has left many deaths around the world? DG: Yes. I consider that the cover for this album is a work of art, it is really important for many works to reflect what one expresses as depression, sadness, death and at the same time understanding. So we really wanted to have a different album cover and we wanted to have after the storm a kind of reflection on the times we are living through, there is a kind of rebirth, and at the same time there is a death that expresses that we have to take care of ourselves. themselves and that includes our planet, and many people are beginning to realize how important it is to be part of all this and generate a change in our environment and how important it is to return that favor to our planet because we cannot survive without it. So I think the album cover reflects the shame of many of us who call ourselves “human”. And one must prepare for all kinds of comments and what the brain thinks, because this can be interpreted in various ways CR: Now let's talk about your story in Sepultura
Your debut with the band was for Against in '98, and you've lived with them ups and downs until this day. How do you feel to be part of one of the biggest bands in the world ... has it been easy or difficult to stay strong all these years? DG: I really feel amazing and at the same time very lucky, you know, I'm doing something that I really love. I was lucky enough to meet people with whom I can relate and then I ended up earning so much being part of something so significant not only in the history of Brazil and South America as well. You know that I am very proud to be part of it and I never imagined adopting a whole culture and a nation that you have known for a long time and it makes me feel that I am Brazilian in a certain way, to miss that warmth and love that I received at the same time. Over the years, the support of Brazil has been very useful in the way I work and relate to the band, and I consider that to be a lot of responsibility and I learned a lot living there learning another language, knowing more about their culture, and about the people who has a lot of respect for the band, and we express all of that every time we play live, but I really feel that I am representing Brazil in many ways, and that feeling is beautiful, and that is why I am proud to express it, and all that in my life has been positive. CR: Many fans in this next question that I will ask you will be waiting for your answer. Let's talk about Sepultura's "true fans" "special fans" "yandere fans" (laughs)
Many have considered Sepultura without Max (Cavalera) as a "dead band", or "Sepultura doing covers of Sepultura", your arrival in the band marked a challenge to raise it again despite the senseless hatred that many had against Andreas, Paulo, Igor in the years leading up to their departure and then Eloy. The big question is: Did you ever think about leaving Sepultura because of so much hatred from the fans and especially towards you? DG: Not really, (laughs) I would be lying to give you a quick answer like that, I'll be honest with you and put my point of view to this perception that many people have had over the years. These hateful comments only give you an impression depending on which side you choose and people can choose a right side and a wrong side, especially when it comes to the Internet, where everything looks very white or very black, or being outside or inside a certain side, and sometimes depending on where you are you can have a slightly more complex vision. People through the years have understood the changes and the evolution of the band, and that is positive based on understanding, and we have done positive things, but we have also heard negative things, in the end we do not give the importance to that for the simple fact that we have been on tour and it is very minimal to see online publications or to write something on social networks for example, and for me it is difficult to pay attention to all that about inventions or negative comments, or I wonder: have people ever seen me live with a complete setlist covering everything? Or didn't you listen to an album with my voice from start to finish? Simply because of those kinds of tendencies one falls into the game of following the herd, which is very unfortunate, but that can happen, and despite having played with great bands like Metallica, Slayer or System Of a Down there is still that type of doubts, and it is incredible. One questions to a certain extent how things are going to achieve these opportunities, and being honest Johonny I really don't care about those negative comments, and especially since I joined Sepultura. In life there are always enemies who are like really angry babies who cry together, who pass you pointing fingers and saying that all my work with them is bad, and the truth is I don't have time for that. Actually, through all these years I feel very grateful to those who have really appreciated what we have done during all this time, but it really does not matter that people to this day continue to talk shit. Many people already passed through the band and left, and they did not want to be part of that, that was their choice, since then only Andreas and Paulo Sixto would remain, and we have continued with our truth until now, I feel calm and I do not have any I object to that, but I don't stress or pay attention to that kind of thing. I have a high esteem for myself and the rest of the band for everything that has been done, for example being in concerts like Rock In Rio or as in other important festivals around the world makes us value the history that has been written since The principle with which we are writing now, playing in places or countries where he has never visited makes this whole experience more than pleasant, people go to our shows and support us, buy our merchandise, support the scene, and see them face to face in a show is the most positive thing in this balance and it is the reality with which we all live on a daily basis. CR: It's good to know that bands like you stay together, by the way, I have a lot of respect for the history of Sepultura as much as in its classic line-up as in the current one, at this point being mature I consider that it is something totally meaningless that many people be resentful of the changes that occurred in the past, and that they are doing this now.
I remember in a compilation years ago called Monsters Of Metal (I don't know what volume it was), at a friend's house we enjoyed it from start to finish, and suddenly Bullet the Blue Sky appeared on the screen, which is a cover of U2, by the way. tremendous adaptation of the Irish, and I thought: this looks good, but we know that there is a lot of puritan who shouted that "the new formation sucks" "Sepulfake", and to this day it is confirmed that people still live with closed minds living of the past, at least the years pass and you have earned the respect of many. It is a great plus point. DG: That's right, man, we endure the sacrifice of our lives, we tour leaving our families and children, all this implies a mentality of not giving up and sticking together. That has been a challenge that we have managed to deal with during all these years, that implies being better people and musicians committed to knowing what we will do in our presentations, pushing ourselves to make good music for the fans, and we have a clear point of view of how. things could go on a downward spiral, that no one is attending our shows, or that the albums are getting bad reviews, then it would be like it's okay, and it's not enough, and we strive to give our all on stage and live for the day. in a positive way. Despite the fact that the internet is trending in the forums and they speak good or bad about us, many people come up and tell us that at first they did not like our music, and now they do, or that before they did not like my style of singing. I like where they are now, among other good things. Being very honest, I have heard a lot of that as if I did not understand it at first, but it took me a while to understand everything, but now I have processed the good and the bad, and at the end of that balance I have liked the experience that has been lived up to now. There will always be people who love or hate our works like Roots or Chaos A.D (laughs), including that phenomenon happens with the great bands, like Metallica for example, each album has fans who listen it to death. CR: What you say is very true, there are people who love a certain classic period in the history of every band. Like for example Metallica that had a glorious time from Kill Em All to the Black Album, but when they released Load, Re-Load, or St. Anger and people reacted negatively to those albums, the same was with Sepultura that some from Morbid prefer Visions to Roots, but when they released works like Against, Nation or Roorback, many tore their clothes at that, it was curious to see all that years ago.
DG: It was very crazy to see people's reactions, like for example when they released… And Justice For All, and people said “I won't follow this band anymore”, “I won't buy their records anymore” (laughs) but the The worst reaction of the purists was when they had the Black Album they said "this band is finished", "it died and they sold out" (laughs) CR: Speaking of Metallica, and that we are talking about SepulQuarta making quick parentheses, this year the Black Album celebrates its 30 years in style, and they will launch the Deluxe edition, but what is most striking is the Blacklist where many artists they will make their versions of each of the songs on this album, some good… others… to be forgotten… what do you think of this trend with the fans?
DG: It's crazy, you know how I feel like I'm a music fan too, but I'm not, this would seem more like a contest than valuing bands, in my mind I don't create scenarios that are so unrealistic, love the musician and I respect everything he does, I love being surrounded by musicians, in the same way I love the scene, that's why I'm part of it and I'm a staunch fan of many bands. I think sometimes people can take a while to choose good things, it's like they hate when people do it like that or try to put the artist in a wooden box and there he has to stay. And that consequently makes you lose fans in a fast way, and they leave everything at a point where you cannot move forward and you have to listen to yourself and trust what you do and if that happens, that is where people can understand that. period, and that's perfect, great, and if they don't, they stay at a point of non-neutral. That phenomenon always happens with bands day by day, some people will like your music or not and they reach a point where the fan harasses and you think that your effort is a waste of time, when they go after certain artists, they harass them or They even buy a ticket to go to the show and complain at the time that the artists interact, and by this I mean that there are serious psychological problems that some go through. CR: During all these years that the band has been touring around the world, for you, what is the best audience Sepultura has had in a live show? the European or the Latin American? What can you share with us?
DG: I think the most important moments we have experienced in recent years was playing at Rock in Rio, it's a great feeling to be there, you know, united with incredible artists, to make that time with the fans be really creative in a stage. As an artist and being part of the band, I consider that I am part of a great legacy, and in that place many bands have recorded their CDs and DVDs because in Brazil it is one of the best places to do something like that, and many people know about the history. from Sepultura, where they come from, and we are very eager to play on the road again, not only in South America or Europe, we want to visit countries where we have never played, we know that there are many fans who are waiting for us eager to enjoy a concert, and for that reason we want to organize a tour, and make the scene in various regions of the continent strengthen again, that the demands of the fans return for more live shows, and with some patience and luck that result will be more than evident when the pandemic ends, and everyone will not want to miss that moment, to be part of the return to concerts, and compared to audiences, I think the Latin American brings a fresher atmosphere, and interacting with them It offers you direct learning, and many artists have a beautiful concept of the Central and South American public. So when all this happens, everything will be happy as it was before. CR: Yes, it will be a matter of waiting for people to enjoy a concert without fear or distancing as it should be. As you know, many people have lost their jobs and therefore have run out of money, since the beginning of the crisis, piracy has been in greater demand, making everyone look at this as a "cheaper" option in the absence of obtaining a CD or a Vinyl. , What do you think about this?
DG: All of this has stemmed from a situation where people have never been before, I find it hard to believe that certain things are happening in a real and scandalous way. The crisis and the lack of jobs, and what affects the bands and labels with piracy, along with other problems lead to a chain reaction effect where conspiracies that affect the history of humanity come to light. It is inevitable that these things happen and that they affect us all, and it is something that people have had a hard time assimilating since the confinement began in early 2020, I think this is a combination of mentality along with the feeling of being trapped in a home under control and online because that's the only thing that people have been doing all this time, and what they do is spend hours and hours online trying to stay connected, or to earn an income in that modality, and everything that generates a combination of fear, conspiracy and ideas whose thoughts can be dangerous, so people look to music or platforms as an outlet to relieve that tension. Corporations today can manipulate and control many of the situations that exist, and you realize that you live under a situation where we are manipulable, and escaping from that is a healthy option, and people need a face-to-face interaction and have everything. that information in front of you and that you know the reasons for what affects us all equally. Being in front of a person in these times is something more reliable than you are interacting online, and at that point we can feel lucky in knowing and understanding what happens with people, their thinking posture, stereotypes, and especially of their believes. And that is where people can be influenced, and in these conditions people need to communicate and not live constantly in discussion due to the lack of resources and jobs that generates a greater burden on homes. It only remains to hope that people change their mentality, and that they can be prepared for events that can generate changes in a better way. CR: Many young Thrash, Death and Black metal bands looks in Sepultura an influence.
What do you think of this phenomenon of new blood and new bands around the world? DG: I definitely want to thank you for taking the time to listen, and I love that you have that connection to music because that's what made me a fan and enjoy that passion that I'm always influenced by something that I really appreciate and really appreciate. I appreciate it, you know because it was one of the reasons why I got into this world, meeting and working with a group of people who enjoy making good music and giving that to the audience where you live from an exchange of energy, you know it's tremendous, because you have the feeling that you are doing things very well, and that people appreciate that has a special meaning for all of us who are artists. CR: What is your point of view on this trend of bands that do concerts via streams, is Sepultura for or against this?
DG: We are definitely not against it. I think it is a great way to interact with your audience even though you are absent due to a different setting, but I think it is important that many bands maintain that connection with their fans and show that it is a really great way to approach using this technology now. , and of course, it's not the same feeling and it sucks to play in front of a camera. In that there is no comparison and it marks a commitment to approach people with your music with the sole objective that you have a good time at that time, and despite doing all this online it implies doing these modalities so that many bands stay alive in the map. Despite all the bad news, fans buy tickets to see the shows and participate in the setlists that are preparing for the occasion, and this shows that the connection between the band and its fans is strong, and makes all this in the end as least stressful as possible on both sides. CR: If you chose two Sepultura albums, either from the first lineup or from the current one, which would be your favorites in this case?
DG: Wow! They never really asked me this question, well, the album with which I met the band was Arise, I looked at the band in those years when they were experiencing an important moment in their international career, and that album instantly grabbed you. Then the second would be Chaos AD, because there is a very hard element in their sound, and all that was the development of their proposal both in execution and in lyrics, I could define that they developed their proposal very well on that album, they defined a pattern of identity by the use of elements of traditional Brazilian music and at that point they were older, despite having had very interesting albums in their careers that influenced Slayer and listening to everything in those years was great, but the real moment It was when they caught us with Arise, we all lived a maze in our minds and that work focused us on the right path. CR: Once this situation returns to normal, do you have any pending tours to reschedule or is the outlook for live shows uncertain for now?
DG: For now we have plans for November and December of this year in Europe, and we are coordinating everything in places where mass vaccinations have been given. For the United States we have plans to tour in March 2022, and then from there we would open dates for several countries in Latin America, and we are eager to return there and play for all our fans. It will be a matter of luck that everything goes well for 2022, although for now we have no plans at the moment, but we have options open as part of the promotion of this new album. We know that at the moment there are many bands that are preparing their agendas and we can possibly share or coincide paths in festivals, and the fans hope that all this happens and we want to do complete shows where the fans can enjoy and thus remove the fears that have affected us. during all these months. CR: Derrick, what message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I want to thank you for this pleasant conversation for Conexion Rock Radio, it has been a great honor to be able to speak with you on this day.
DG: Thanks to you Johonny for coming closer and expressing interest in what we are currently doing, I want to thank the fans throughout Latin America for the great support we have had throughout these months of pandemic, especially a greeting to The fans of Honduras who hope to be able to play in your country soon, and make that moment something important in our career by playing in places where we have never played, we hope to see you very soon on tours around the world, and stay safe at home, stay positive Faced with these adverse times, we will soon be with you all having a great time at a concert and bringing you good metal! We love you guys and we'll see you very soon! CR: Derick, thank you for your time, and I thank my friends at Nuclear Blast for making this communication possible back home. Once again the best hits with this tremendous album and we look forward to talking with you again about another important moment in Sepultura's career. A hug from Honduras and take care of yourself!
