THEM

THEM
An Exciting Adventure In Fear City If you are a lover of Heavy Metal with conceptual horror stories, we invite you to read the following interview that we offer for all of you at Conexión Rock Radio. Our contact on this occasion is to New York, and there we spoke again with Troy Norr, the person who gives life to KK Fossor, and who is the vocalist of the band THEM, who in 2022 present us with their new album, the fourth in their discography called Fear City, which was released on October 28, 2022 through the German label Steamhammer, a work that has been acclaimed internationally and that possibly marks an end or a continuation of a saga that would begin with its first release called Sweet Hollow from 2016, and that would literally hook its fans through a series of releases where the protagonist of this story revives in the New York of the 80's to wage a new battle against his enemies. Them is currently conformed by Alexander Palma- Bass, Richie Seibel- Keyboards, Troy Norr- Vocals, Markus Ullrich and Markus Johansson- Guitars, and Steve Bolognese- Drums. We talked about the pros and cons that the band has experienced during the pandemic, the production of this new album and the concept that they offer to their fans around the world, a brief retrospective of the evolution they have had in their career, and the invitation that Fossor makes in this interview to be part of An Exciting Adventure In Fear City Conexión Rock Radio: Good evening from Honduras Troy, it is an honor to have you again so that our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world want to know about the interesting news that Them has for the end of this 2022, welcome! Troy Norr: Hello Johonny, thank you very much again for your interest in the band, after a long time we talk again my dear friend, and I extend a greeting to the people of Honduras and to the fans throughout Latin America and other continents through this interview with you. CR: On the contrary, thank you for having me in your house, and I wish everyone well there. I start my interview to know how you feel about returning to action after these two and a half years of forced hiatus that the pandemic has caused all over the world?
TN: I would say that the truth is that nothing has changed relatively, despite the fact that there are many bands that do their thing in different continents and we have all faced difficulties during all these months, the only things that we have not done is to do an online concert, because in Europe the situation is different because there have been many cancellations, and the best thing for everyone was to take advantage of that time to compose a new album during the pandemic, it is the first time that we have had to do a remote process but the factors did not matter and we were able to make a great album, and that in the end is what interests us all. CR: The important thing is that the band was able to carry out this new project that we will talk about now and that is called Fear City, which was released on October 28 through Steamhammer, by the way, congratulations, this perfect movie soundtrack belongs to Them!
What reactions have people around the world had when listening to this new release both in physical and digital format. TN: I will tell you that our intention as a band was to make an album that was very well received by the people, which we are seeing now with many reviews that have given the album very good scores, but beyond the whole point was to do something that it wasn't any different than the other albums we've released in the past. In fact, if you look at these four albums, it's a story that's been told from the beginning and continuously followed up about this man who lost his family and would come back for revenge. At the end of Return From Hemmersmoor he dies, but a long time later he would resurrect to life through a toxic chemical spill in 1981, and wakes up in a city completely overwhelmed by the technology of that time and that would need his assistant Remsen, but he is dead. So he searches among his descendants and finds his great-great-grandson, his name is Renaldo, a very elitist person of that time and who precisely lives in Brooklyn, he is a completely different character from Remsen, and once both characters meet, Renaldo will support him. in this new adventure where they take a trip around the city of New York and meet a prostitute who knows where the descendants of Peter Thompson are, precisely Snr. Thompson, a televangelist from the 80s and he is in charge of a criminal organization that runs clandestinely throughout the city, in a nutshell, he is the crime lord in this story, and everyone will wonder what will happen to KK Fossor in this part of the story where he meets friends and becomes allies, all this takes place in his lair, a very famous basement in New York called The Limelight, that place was previously a church but over time it became a club in the early 80's, so wherever they go all the places where they are mentioned in the album are real, obviously the story is completely fictitious, that way Minister Thompson's men track down Fossor learning about the past he had He with his ancestor, and he is aware of it and seeks to change that part of the story since he woke up as a result of the toxic spill, his appearance is different as well as the time in which everything develops. do. For that reason people are invited to know what the author is talking about in this part, and for that reason it is a story that has had a loop of continuity in four albums, one thing is certain, that this story will have a continuation. , there is definitely an end or it could be interpreted as a definitive end, if for some reason the band does not want to continue, this could be considered as a closure to this saga, and many might think that it will happen now, these are questions that time itself will answer. CR: This is very interesting in the context of the story, but I want to know if this could be the end of the trilogy?
How do you feel about closing this story that began years ago with Manor of the Se7en Gables in such an epic way? TN: In each album we try to close everything in an epic way as you say, and in this new work everything goes differently, I am very happy with the way it ends and especially with the music that has been the main ingredient, for something like this there are two elements: the music and the story, and in this case the music is always first, and depending on the way you drive, everything can make the story survive by itself, in this case we have small intermissions that they help tell the story as time goes by, and that's where you know if he's capable of those elements keeping the listener's interest through the songs, the way the album unfolds I wouldn't consider it as an epic way to end it, I look at it as a death march, and one of those examples is on the track The Crossing of Hellgate Bridge which is 9 minutes long, and for everyone making this album and the way the story was handled it was a very fun process. CR: In Fear City, KK Fossor wakes up in 1980 New York, 120 years after the events of Hemmersmoor, to definitively confront the descendant of Peter Thompson, who has influence throughout the city, who motivated you to make a more modern context in the musical universe of Them?
TN: In the first three albums of the band the story takes place in the 1800s, now the plot unfolds in 1981, actually this was not my idea, but the initiative was given by the guitarist Markus Johansson, he proposed the idea to me to develop the story in this new album and I really liked in bringing KK back to the 80's and I can say that here the story takes an interesting continuation in a less predictable way, in my case I grew up in New York, my father was an Officer of Police, and I remember walking through those streets without graffiti, without the dirty, without prostitutes and drug addicts. Now times have changed and everything was very dark, which is reflected in the track Welcome to Fear City, which is actually a reference created by the Police Department that was sent to tourists as a warning to be careful when walking through those streets, especially after dark. CR: This is literally a tribute to the place where you have lived all your life, by the way, the cover is the work of the Guatemalan Mario López, and that the concept fits perfectly in a classic comic, I have a curiosity there, the girl that appears together with Renaldo is the one who narrates in the intermissions in some tracks of the album?
TN: In fact, there are two women who appear on this album, the girl who appears on the cover is called Valerie, she is a street girl who has joined KK and Renaldo to kill the entire lineage of the Thompson, and the The voice you hear in the intermissions is a DJ who is a radio announcer, and precisely that same voice is the one that appears in the movie The Warriors (The DJ is an unnamed African-American woman who directs a radio program that all the gangs tune in to). , and some of the city. She is known for being seemingly omniscient. She was played by Lynne Thigpen and voiced by Pat Floyd) here the plot was similar to the movie, as the DJ in code alerted Minister Thompson's thugs where KK was, and his friends as the album progressed, as they were constantly being chased, and through the radio she alerted them. Those were different times in those years, and she knew where they could be found. CR: For this new album we have changes in the line-up, Steve Bolognese joins, who is the new drummer of the band, and who has worked with other artists such as Ross The Boss, Witherfall, Beyond the Embrace and Into Eternity.
What impressions do you have of the performance that Steve has contributed in this new work of Them? TN: Steve is a fantastic drummer, let me tell you that when Angel (Cotte ex band drummer) left we were very sad, we consider him part of the family and I am his friend even though he is no longer with us, he left in good terms, since he couldn't play with two bands at the same time, and currently Angel is with Demolition Hammer. When Steve shows up in the mixing process I was very impressed by the way he played the drums, I hadn't really heard him and when we flew to Colorado I was able to see his capabilities, and we spent five days there recording his parts and he really did a great job, I was sitting there watching it do it in the studio, because in my case drum tracks are like a road map, since it is the first instrument that is recorded first. So Steve did a fantastic job, he's a phenomenal drummer, and he's a funny guy, plus when we go on tour he likes women, we always laugh at those situations and we hope that when all this normalizes we can all play together with luckily we hope to be able to record another album and that would be really amazing. CR: Once again you form a team with Dave Otero, everything indicates that both the producer and the band know the perfect formula to make great albums like this one.
How did the pandemic influence the composition of this new album with Dave? Was the process easy, complicated or did more ideas come up during the recording? TN: When we were in the process of Return to Hemmersmoor I had to go to his studio twice to follow up on the recording of the drums and the final mix. When the pandemic took the world by surprise, we established a remote way in real time through the internet, while the new album was mixed, although relatively speaking it was practically the same, only this time everything was remote. After we recorded Steve's drums and supervised the whole process, it would be time to listen to the final mixes, far from flying to Dave's studio, all that was on the internet, and I decided to listen song by song in each device that I had at hand at home, I must have listened to the album on multiple sources, in the car, on a speaker, on a bluetooth, and headphones. I had to listen to every detail that involved the instruments and in the end it was a great advantage to do all this remotely instead of flying in an airplane and even more so in a completely irregular situation like the one we have experienced in recent months. CR: Being the vocalist of the band, what is your point of view of how Them has evolved favorably through the years?
TN: I must tell you that I feel very honored to be part of this project, I am a very humble person, and I love music. At the beginning we started with three people in the band and over the years we managed to maintain a very stable lineup, that shows the friendship we all have both on and off stage, we come from the roots of Thrash Metal, it's what we love , although for example there are members who have their influences from other genres such as the keyboardist and the bassist who like progressive for example, and that is very good, I have no problem with it, but when we combine all that sound it is our way of express to the world who we are. Until today they always compare us with bands like King Diamond claiming that we are their clones, or even Ghost, and for me Ghost is more pop than metal, and for the people who criticize us I always listen to some of their songs, I'm not a big fan, and they even compare our logos, I think that when our logo was created there was no Ghost yet, and all that was created in 2011, we didn't even know about the existence of the band, so many people would think that we copied their logo. Being in the band we learned to go on tour with people that we did not know and that along the way we became friends, our first challenge was to be the opening band for Helloween in 2016 playing in several cities in the United States and Canada, and I say that it was a challenge because people from all over the world came to see us and even from other countries, it was difficult and it was an important moment of transition as a band to debut on that tour with an album that was meant to be a studio-only project, and that tour would mark the path that years later we had to follow, first we started being friends and then we formed a band, what we have done in all these years is the most rewarding thing I have in my life, even if this ended tomorrow we would always be friends , I would always be in contact with them, I would take a plane to visit them there in Germany, the same with Marcus Johansson who travels from Chicago to have a Greek artist do his tattoos, and whenever there is an opportunity I also visit it, and all this has worked very well because music has brought us together as friends, and this has been a formula that has made us work very well as a band in all these years, and that for me is the most rewarding. CR: The question everyone is asking: what's next after this trilogy?
What will happen to Fossor? Will he rest in peace or will he seek to face new enemies in future stories for other timelines? TN: I couldn't tell you exactly what will happen or what could happen. This is designed so that the band can continue on a conceptual story line. Years ago we were 3 musicians who were inspired by a story from the 1800s, but you don't know what you will do after the story ends in the 80s, the question is if we will go back in time or continue forward? They are answers that I could not answer and that only with time we will obtain those details, but let's say that not everything is going to be predictable, people may think that they will stay in the 80's or go ahead in time, it will be very interesting to see the people's reaction to the next album. I think it will be something very big that people will appreciate. In every story there will be changes including the appearance of KK and his environment, possibly other protagonists will appear that will be revealed at the time. As long as this story continues, it will seek to define itself based on my vision, there will surely be a definitive ending, with everything that may happen in the future could be something that would be subject to discussion and even interpreted in various ways. I am currently 53 years old, I could do more things in the future and if you notice something there have been many artists who at that age became kings in the sixties, and they still do their things well. That is the most interesting of all and that will leave the people who have followed the whole story up to here in suspense. CR: At the end of this interview Troy, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and thanks again for the time you gave me at your house to talk about this great album that Them has made this year, definitely is an undisputed winner
TN: First of all, thanks to you, Johonny, it was great to talk to you again after two years, time flies (laughs), and for the people who know us for the first time, we invite you to give a chance to listen to our discography, it is important that everyone appreciate music as such and avoid valuing this superficially, since doing so makes a judgment that can lead to changes of opinion among people, and sometimes when people make an opinion based on a single song they are not listening to all the work or valuing the effort of the artist, people may or may not like the new album and we know that this is not for everyone. We have been able to forge our history since those first years that we started playing Heavy Metal, and wherever we go there will be fans waiting to enjoy our music, give our proposal a chance, we are interested in whether you like what we do or not in the same way about what we have done with the characters. You might like it and it might fit into various things in your life, some people think I use harmonizers when it's really me layering multiple vocal tracks for that song to have enough harmony, that's why the vocals are recorded on 12 tracks with different layers of sound so that they sound different from each other, and that's what gives it that effect on my voice and I use technological resources like reverb, and they will always think that I use harmonizer, the idea is to be able to offer something that people like . For now we are focused on finding the largest number of dates to be able to play both in Europe and in the United States, we are very anxious to see people after this tremendous blow that the pandemic has given us and we hope to be able to achieve that goal having as important ally to our record label, since through them they give us a great push so that our sound can be heard all over the world, we want to play in several Latin American countries, we want to have fun with people while doing concerts, they have also asked if we will do concerts in New York, and of course I want to do that too, I have families, friends and surely they will come to see us when we have the opportunity to organize a good tour, we will be playing in a club near here and it might sound strange for a great band looking for support to have more presence, and if that happens, sooner or later, I will be very happy that we can work together, do more friends on these trips and we as a band are looking forward to seeing what will happen next, we don't know how things will be but it will be exciting to be back on the road for all the people who follow us and support us. Special thanks to Björn von Oettingen of the Steamhammer Press and Promotion Team for his help in making this interview possible, and to Troy Norr for spending time at home.
